What Is VAR and How Does It Work?

By Football Arena · 04 November 2026

VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee. It is a team of officials who watch the match on screens and help the referee avoid clear and obvious mistakes. It was used at a World Cup for the first time in Russia in 2018.

What can VAR check?

VAR only gets involved in four types of situation:

How a check works

The VAR team looks at every goal and big moment automatically. If they see a clear error, they tell the referee through the earpiece. The referee can accept their advice or go to the pitch-side monitor for an on-field review. When you see the referee drawing a rectangle in the air, that is the signal for a VAR decision.

Why does it take so long?

Offside checks need lines drawn on the screen at the exact moment the ball is played, and the officials want to be sure before overturning a decision. Some competitions now use semi-automated offside technology to make these checks faster.

Why fans still argue

VAR is meant to fix clear and obvious errors, but people disagree about what "clear" means. A handball one fan thinks is obvious might look accidental to another. Many supporters also miss the old joy of celebrating a goal straight away without waiting for a check.

Has it made football fairer?

Most studies and leagues report that more key decisions are now correct. But football is still a game of opinions, and VAR has not ended the debates, it has just moved them to the screen.

What do you think: has VAR made football better or worse?
